Starting off the new year means a new set of key dates for payroll teams to be mindful of. As most payroll teams know, deadlines for tax deposits, information filing, and other reporting are critical for avoiding costly penalties. Here are some important dates to keep on the radar for 2022.
- Monday, January 17, 2022 – Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, January 31, 2022 – Last day to distribute forms W-2 to employees. If employee forms are distributed electronically, make sure forms are accessible no later than this date. Deadline to provide employee copies of forms 1095-B or 1095-C. This is also the last day to mail or electronically submit forms W-2 and W-3 to the SSA, and for 1099-NEC with the IRS. Deadline to file form 941 for the 4th quarter of 2021.
- Tuesday, February 15, 2022 – Employees who claimed exemption from federal income tax withholding in 2021 and wish to continue with exempt federal withholding status in 2022 must submit a new form W-4.
- Monday, February 21, 2022 – President’s Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, February 28, 2022 – Deadline for paper filing of forms 1094-C and 1095-C to IRS.
- Thursday, March 31, 2022 – Deadline for electronic filing of forms 1099, 1094-C, and 1095-C to IRS.
- Monday, April 18, 2022 – Tax Day for personal returns without extension.
- Monday, May 2, 2022 – Deadline to file form 941 for the 1st quarter of 2022.
- Monday, May 30, 2022- Memorial Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, June 20, 2022 – Juneteenth observed (Banking holiday)
- Monday, July 2, 2022 – Independence Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, August 1, 2022 – Deadline to file form 941 for the 2nd quarter of 2022.
- Monday, September 5, 2022 – Labor Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, October 10, 2022 – Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples’ Day (Banking holiday)
- Monday, October 31, 2022 – Deadline to file form 941 for the 3rd quarter of 2022.
- Friday, November 11, 2022 – Veterans Day (Banking holiday)
- Thursday, November 24, 2022 – Thanksgiving (Banking holiday)
- Monday, December 26, 2022 – Christmas observed (Banking holiday)

While the dates above are some of the more critical deadlines to keep in mind, don’t forget about the ongoing local, state, and federal deadlines. Federal deposit schedules are based on each company’s payroll schedule and tax liability, and can vary from business to business. Semi-weekly depositors generally need to make deposits on Wednesdays and/or Fridays depending on their pay schedule, and monthly depositors by the 15th of each month.
